Ruthie Sommers Book Update

The Pool House

I know that we have all been anxiously awaiting the release of Ruthie Sommers' book. Yesterday Ruthie emailed me a few pictures from the party and an update (in her own words) about the status of her pending book:

Judith Regan first approached me about working on a book. My initial title was called Reinvention—A Decorators Notebook. However, the original idea was put aside and I was asked to make it more accessible, include all that is hip in LA, and to focus on branding. After Judith Regan, we decided to get back to the basics, which was thrilling for me personally.

The latest version now feels more genuine and more me. I do not want an empire and do not want to stop decorating for the sake of feeding the engine of a decorating empire. At times it seems that everyone and anyone needs to put out a book asap. Making an interesting and lasting book takes time.

The more experience I get, the more I decorate, the more mistakes I make, the better I get. I want to produce an interesting book with lots of experience behind it. I now have two years of shooting in Paris, Virginia, LA, NY and the film is divine. Now, it is time to get back to basics and get back to my original idea about being a decorator and all the funny, laughable, challenging and rewarding things it has to offer.

The book will also include my drawings and other designers that inspire me. I am waiting to hear the publish date, but it will be at least a year.

I've loved Ruthie's style since i first saw her chippendale sofa in the wonderful Hicks fabric on the cover of Domino. Probably don't need to say it, but I CAN'T WAIT!!

Wow, Mary and Ruthie in one trip! Several years ago, my husband asked what I wanted for our 8th anniversary. My answer was to go to Ruthie's cute shop. So off to L.A. we flew from J.F.K. With four little ones at home it wasn't easy but it was a dream come true for me.
Thanks for sharing!

Doesn't that bright blue chair emphasise the room brilliantly! Love the primitive painting above. Looking forward to the book.

Kudos to Ruthie for staying true to herself!! I love her response here. We need more talented people like her who are into creating something beautiful and lasting instead of just feeding the beast of consumerism.

Love the flowers potted in Sterling bowls. Wish I'd thought of that for Easter. Next year! xoxo RHP
