Author and style maven Susanna Salk continues to go from strength to strength when it comes to her books. Like many of you, I could not wait to get my hands on her first book A Privileged Life: Celebrating Wasp Style, and was equally excited when Susanna released her second book Weekend Retreats. Well now she’s done it again with her latest book Room for Children, with a foreword by Kelly Wearstler. Room for Children is both visually exciting and inspiring, showcasing the work of Kelly Wearstler, Charlotte Moss, Alessandra Branca, Amanda Nisbet, and Jamie Drake, among many others. I wish I had this book 13 years ago!

I think childrens' rooms are the most fun to decorate. Personally, I think children should have input in how their room is decorated. I do however, think it is always good to design a room with the growing child in mind. Race car beds may be cute and fun at age 6, but it's the rare 12 year old boy who still wants to sleep on a bed with wheels.
Children are such a gift and decorating their rooms to suit their personalities is so vital. I remember well my mother decorating mine so wonderfully with me in mind, I found happiness and joy each time I entered my room. It was my own little sanctuary!
These rooms are wonderful, and the last pic so dreamy.
So beautiful! I love that second image and the juxtaposition of the more modern crib and the traditional, ornate chairs. It is adorable for a child and sophisticated at the same time.
Can't wait to get my hands on this! Decorating with children in mind is so important and such a challenge (as I type this out from a family room whose grand point of reference is a Thomas the Train table!). I know this book will have a lot of great knowledge to impart.

Hi Ronda! I am a huge fan of your blog. The pictures you featured from Susanna Salk's book are fabulous! I agree that children's rooms are so incredibly special and should be decorated with the utmost zest and enthusiasm. These spaces hold all the makings for their future childhood memories. As a designer, the rooms of my kids hold a truly unique place in my heart. I actually showed the room of my youngest daughter, Grayanna, in one my recent blog posts on March 15th. The blog is about "crowns", so as you might imagine, my daughter is quite the princess, in her own right! HA! My daughter (13) has phases, like the moon, where she redecorates and re- arranges her bedroom.

Susanna's style is amazing & why not include kid's rooms? Nothing I dislike more than the kitschy, themed nurseries and children's spaces. These rooms any adult would adore.

Sounds like a great book, but I have a few hesitations regarding some of the age-appropriate elements. But no question regarding the beauty of the rooms. Eighteenth century Venetian side chairs in an infant's room? (Ex: I'm pretty sure there was a lot of lead used in paint during that era) Thanks again for a great post.

the only problem with getting your child's input on his or her room is when he or she requests stripe walls (specifying painted - no wallpaper). combine that with a mother who is a perfectionist = levels, straightedges, chalk lines, and entire weekend and loads of tape. but it did look good.
and a year later 'we' wanted something different.
I love the angel wing chair! childrens room are so fun to decorate because you can get so whimsical and crazy with everything! I love how the rooms are sophisticated enough that they can grow into them!
