My Favorite Things: Andrew Puschel
The fabulous 110-year-old fabric house, F. Schumacher & Co., has long been one of my favorites. It seems that I am not alone in my opinion. Everyone from Dorothy Draper to Jamie Drake has collaborated with the iconic company.
Through the wonderful world of email I have gotten to know Andrew Puschel, the fifth-generation descendant of the founder Frederic Schumacher. Andrew has done an amazing job of revamping the firm’s website and reaching out to designers and bloggers alike.
Andrew has taken a keen interest in sustainable practices and is now working on launching an organic line of fabrics.

My Favorite Things: Eva Jeanbart Lorenzotti
One of my favorite places to shop and browse for ideas is the fabulous VIVRE. And, as one might expect, the brainchild behind the company is equally fabulous!
Your favorite way to stay chic during times of recession?
Smile! Wear fabulous things that you have collected over the years. Be proud and learn how to mix pieces in a creative way that will in turn look fresh and undated. Entertain at home with homemade, simple dinners, delicious drinks, light candles, play good music and surround yourself with great friends.
What is your favorite hostess gift to give this year?
A good luck token! I collect Amulets from my travels and love giving something that symbolizes safety and brings good blessings to the house and hostess.
What is your favorite tip when it comes to holiday entertaining?
I like details that are untraditional and unexpected – it gives a twist on how you celebrate – use artichokes on your table instead of holiday ferns and avoid predictable color palettes.
What’s your favorite stylish and heartfelt gift?
Something special and lasting. Take lots of photos and fill a beautiful album (my favorites range from Smythson to Sam Flax) with the pictures and a personal note on the first page.
What is your favorite floral arrangement for the holidays?
I love flowers in abundance. I pick one color of flower and fill a large hand woven basket to the rim! It is difficult to overdo it with flowers. I like flowers that not only match my color scheme, but are also visually interesting and unexpected.
Your mother-in-law is a former Vogue editor and house guest, what is your favorite dish to serve her for breakfast on Christmas morning?
Eggs sunny side up with Russian Caviar.
Your favorite new item from VIVRE that everyone should own?
I adore our ultra fine cashmere travel kit with a featherweight cashmere wrap. It is the perfect size and weight and comes in three very versatile colors. It is what I am giving everyone for Christmas!

A Burning Question
Growing up my family opened all of our gifts to each other on Christmas Eve and then Santa would leave his gifts on Christmas morning. My husband's family opened all of their gifts on Christmas day. For the past 15 years it has been our tradition to open one gift on Christmas Eve and all the rest on Christmas day.
My husband claims that my family is 'unique' in their tradition and no one else opens all of their gifts on the 24th of December. So I thought I would ask all of you to tell me your tradition. I have set up a poll to help settle this friendly dispute and please feel free to leave your comments, I do love hearing from all of you!

My Favorite Things
Being that today is my favorite day of the year, I thought that I would share with you some of my favorite things. I have had so much fun learning about the favorites of those I admire and still have several to post before the end of 2008. I had not intended to post my own, but several of you have asked in emails and comments so I decided to play along.
I wish all of you the very best this holiday season!
My favorite gift to receive?
Books, books and more books! And a bottle of Pol Roger.

At home with my family! We always attend a Christmas Eve service, come home to a decadent meal and open one gift. Christmas day is a low-key affair with a delicious meal late in the afternoon.
My favorite luxury in life?

My Favorite Things: Michelle Adams
One of the hottest fabrics designers to emerge in recent years is the brilliant Manhattan based Michelle Adams, founder of Rubie Green. After studying apparel and textile design at Michigan State University, Michelle landed her dream job—a coveted position with domino magazine. While working on the magazine’s inaugural "green issue," she realized no one was making eco-friendly textiles in classic prints and saw an opportunity to combine her two passions: design and sustainability. So, in 2007 she left the magazine to start Rubie Green.
During her time at Michigan State University she took a course in sustainability that opened her eyes to the importance of environmentally friendly design. "My professor believed that if we are going to put more products onto the earth then we needed to do so responsibly. It's a concept that has stuck with me throughout the entire manufacturing process, despite the fact that it would have been twenty times easier to manufacture my fabrics in the traditional ways."
You can view all of Michelle’s gorgeous fabrics online. I love the new Jackie pattern, but East Village in raspberry is still my very favorite.
My favorite gift to give this year?
Design books! I'm currently obsessed with the domino Book of Decorating, Thom Filicia Style, and Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton.
My favorite gift to receive?
This year I'm hoping for the faux fur neck warmer from Banana Republic! It looks like real fur...but it's not!
My favorite way to celebrate the holidays?
Driving with my family to our cottage. It's about a 3 hour drive, and we sing Christmas songs and make fun of each other the whole way there.
My favorite luxury in life?
An afternoon nap
My favorite current book?
The domino Book of Decorating
My favorite holiday song?
Winter Wonderland by Aretha Franklin
My favorite party clothes?
Costume jewelry, playful silhouettes and high heels.
My favorite cookie?
I have a bit of a sweet tooth, so I LOVE sugar cookies! Mrs. Fields' Sugar Butter m&m is a bite of heaven.
My favorite city?
I think you know the answer to that…
My favorite place to shop?
J. Crew
My favorite movie to watch again and again?
Something's Gotta Give. I've probably seen it 100 times!

My Favorite Things: Karen Carroll
There is nothing like Southern hospitality, and Karen Carroll, Editor and Chief of Southern Accents, not only embodies this classic trait, she capably shares it with millions of devoted readers.
Like most Southerners, I was raised on Southern Living recipes (I've even had a few of my own published) and have read Southern Accents since I married in 1993. Early on it became my secular bible, and now living in Scotland, I delight in the visual reminders of home.
What sets Karen apart from the crowd is her graciousness, professionalism and accessibility. Again and again she elevates the South through the pages of her glorious magazine.
My favorite gift to give this year?
We're cutting back for everyone but the children in our family this year, not only because of the economy, but also because we're blessed to have so much already. I'm trying to go "Martha" and make a lot of things--we'll see how that goes! I have a 3 year-old niece who is totally into her princess phase, so she's getting a lot of sparkly Cinderella and Snow White things.
My favorite gift to receive?
Doesn’t matter whether it’s a trinket or something luxurious as long as the giver has put some thought behind picking out something they think I’ll like. And hopefully they’ve wrapped it in beautiful paper and ribbon. Call me superficial, but I can get as excited by packaging as what’s inside!
My favorite way to celebrate the holiday?
Always with family. We usually go to my parents or my husband's. This year we're hosting at our house.
My favorite luxury in life?
Time to myself with a glass of wine, a good book and a bath.
My favorite current book?
I always have several books going at once on my bedside table. I’m currently reading Hot, Flat, and Crowded by Thomas Friedman, Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama, and One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell.
I can’t say that any of them would qualify as a favorite book, but I have to confess that I keep reaching for Candace’s. Frankly with all the stress going on in the world, it’s just easier to fall asleep reading something that is pure fluff.
My favorite holiday song?
I love holiday music and must have over 100 Christmas cds. "We Need a Little Christmas," by Johnny Mathis (from one of my favorite movies, Auntie Mame) and "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," by Andy Wiliams are two of my traditional favorites. And I'm currently obsessed with the Flo Rida and Trey Songz remix of Jingle Bells on Gap.com.
My favorite party clothes?
Sounds boring, but I usually go with something black. But always with great shoes.
My favorite cookie?
My mother's sugar cookies with royal icing--I've never tasted better. And I also love macarons from Laduree in Paris or Sucre in New Orleans.
My favorite city?
Venice. To me it's the most magical city on earth.
My favorite place to shop?
Takashimaya in New York and William Yeoward in London. I also loved Charlotte Moss' townhouse in New York. I'm still mourning its closing.
My favorite movie to watch again and again?
The BBC version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. It's 5 hours long, so it's impossible to do in one sitting, but I'll never tire of the Regency interiors or the complicated courtship between Mr. Darcy and Lizzie Bennet!

Christmas Menu
Every year when I plan my holiday table and menu I turn to the photos of renowned Atlanta interior designer Dan Carithers' Christmas table. After all these years it still inspires me and it is the reason I started collecting red stemware.
Growing up in my home we only had turkey on Thanksgiving and therefore I do not associate the icon bird with Christmas. Unlike my husband’s upbringing, Christmas Eve was the big night in our house. While his mother roasted a turkey for Christmas day, my mother would make chicken in wine sauce served over wild rice on the 24th of December. I can smell and taste it now, even as I write.
Over the past 15 years my husband and I have melded the best of each of our families’ traditions to create our own. We now have a special Christmas Eve meal after a candlelight service and another decadent meal Christmas day.
In some areas of my life I am a purest, however, when it comes to Christmas dinner, I enjoy planning a new meal each year. This year my husband and I have been dreaming up classic recipes that conjure up a bygone era—Brandy Alexander and Sidecar cocktails, Iceberg Wedges with Roquefort Dressing, Potted Crab Royale and Brandy Bread & Butter Pudding.
For my Brandy Bread & Butter Pudding I am using Victoria Amory’s recipe and for Potted Crab Royale I am referencing my copy of René Verdon The White House Chef Cookbook.
Chef René Verdon was appointmented by Mrs. Kennedy in the spring of 1961. He soon established a reputation for his superb dinners, luncheons, and buffets. He infused the White House with French elegance, much to the dismay of many. Verdon, the first official White House chef, resigned in 1965 when President Johnson demanded that he cook Texas-ranch style.
René Verdon’s Potted Crab Royale
1 pound cooked crabmeat, finely shredded
4 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 cup heavy cream
½ teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon white pepper
dash cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
3 tablespoons bread crumbs
Directions:
Mix crabmeat with butter, cream, mustard, salt, pepper, cayenne, Worcestershire sauce and 4 tablespoons of Parmesan; toss lightly.
Divide among 6 lightly buttered ramekins. Sprinkle each with the remaining Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs. Bake in a 400° F oven for 10 minutes or until golden.
I believe these photos came from Food & Wine, but can not locate the source. Please let me know if you have more details.

My Favorite Things: Elaine Turner
Back in November I did a post on the super fashionable and talented handbag designer Elaine Turner. On my last trip to Texas we had the chance to catch up over dinner and drinks. Elaine is one of those people who exudes style and is super fun to be around. So of course I just had to know a few of her favorite things!
Not only do I adore Elaine, but her handbags are equally wonderful! And, in the spirit of the holiday season, Elaine Turner is offering 20% off ALL handbags for All the Best readers!
Some of my very favorite bags include: the Leah Emerald Glazed Embossed Lizard Leather Clutch; the Darby Coral Genuine Python Clutch; and the Sadie Steel Metallic Embossed Lizard with Bamboo Handle. Happy shopping and if you do get a new bag, be sure to let me know your thoughts!
My favorite gift to give this year?
For me, I am not sure it’s about giving a specific gift this year... I think my gift will be hosting a gathering with my closest friends and family. I think it is about appreciating each other and being grateful for what we have—I’m not sure we need anymore.
My favorite gift to receive?
Something personal and thoughtful. My very best friend just complied a custom CD for me with all of my favorite country songs (I am from Texas so it's a must that you have your country on during the holidays!). She couldn't wait until Christmas to give it to me, so I have been listening to it every morning on my way to work and it puts a smile on my face knowing she made it just for me!
My favorite luxury in life?
FREE TIME with family and friends. My closest girlfriends and I have a spa day at this time every year- now that’s true luxury!
My favorite current book?
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch—it's a quick read but extremely powerful and poignant. It immediately puts it all into perspective.
My favorite party clothes?
I love classic black with a pop of fuchsia during the holidays. A classic feminine black trench coat with dupioni cigarette pants, fuchsia satin ballet flats and of course STATEMENT jewels…hmmmm love that!!
My favorite city?
Home—here in Houston—especially during the holiday! Even though it's a mild 70 degrees on Christmas day most years, there is no other place I would rather be than home with my family for Christmas. We get creative down here! We create a winter wonderland experience inside—just crank the A/C up and you would be amazed at how cozy it can feel! ha!
My favorite holiday song?
"The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole

My Favorite Things: Ruthie Sommers
Ruthie's adorable daughter Eloise with Bear and Lilah
I will forever be grateful to the wonderfully talented Ruthie Sommers. Way back when, in the summer of 2007, a little unknown blogger had this idea of profiling stylish industry icons and tastemakers on her blog. At the time only a few hundred people read All the Best and no one knew of Ronda Carman, until Girl About Town Rita Konig did a blog post on the domino Daily Dose.
Lucky for me Rita, Ruthie, Susanna Salk and Schuyler Samperton all graciously agreed to interviews - and as they say, the rest is history. Thank you Ruthie, I wish you and yours all the very best!
My favorite gift to give this year?
A bouquet of paperwhite bulbs and one soft light compact fluorescent light bulb tied with raffia), nature and nurture!
My favorite gift to receive?
A personal visit from friends or donations to charities made in my name. I don’t want a thing this year. Well, maybe, Rosetta Stone French lessons on tape...
My favorite way to celebrate the holidays?
Small dressy dinner parties with friends, listening to holidays songs in the morning with my once a year hazelnut coffee and cream, fires, dancing with Eloise on my marble floor to Santa tunes, coffee cake, shrimp and grits on Christmas eve and adorning my dogs with silly red bows for parties.
My favorite current books?
I have a new favorite book every week…any holiday book, Albert Pinto classics, Carolyn Roehm. I also like How to be Lovely: The Audrey Hepburn Way of Life—yes, I know, this sounds so cheesy but it is a great reminder about how to listen to others more and talk less about ourselves.
My favorite luxury in life?
This is it—being asked for my opinion, having a job, having two legs that allow me to play tennis, a healthy child, parents still living and a home to live in.
My favorite holiday song?
Ode to Joy. Is this a holiday song? Regardless, it always makes me cry.
My favorite party clothes?
I am a bad shopper, so anything my stylist friends make me wear or give me—thanks Lee and Kent!
My favorite cookie?
Any cookie at someone else's house…they always taste better for some reason!
My favorite cities?
Paris on Christmas day, NYC any time before Christmas day, anywhere in Virginia for all of December.
My favorite places to shop?
Target for toys, Hollyhock in Los Angeles for gifts, Leontine Linens and any USED bookstore.
My favorite movie to watch again and again?
How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Victoria Amory + Holiday Giveaway
Anyone who knows me also knows that I am a collector of cookbooks. I could spend hours flipping through the pages and daydreaming about dinner parties and trying to imagine the smells and flavors of interesting dishes. I am also very picky when it comes to cookbooks! I want for them to be beautiful, colorful, well written and simple—all traits of the new cookbook Delicious Flavors by Victoria Amory.
I am in love with my copy of Delicious Flavors and thrilled to be partnering with the beautiful and talented Victoria. As a holiday gift, two lucky All the Best readers will receive a copy of Delicious Flavors.
Simply subscribe to All the Best at the left of this post to enter. If you are a current subscriber, then reply to this email with ‘Delicious Flavors’ in the subject line. The two recipients will be announced on December 24, 2008.
Who has had the biggest influence on your style of cooking and entertaining?
From my father I learned the art of welcoming everyone at home and from my mother the ability of turning not much food into a grandiose feast in a matter of minutes.
From my sister-in-law, Chessy Rayner, I learned the timing of a dinner party. Once that first guest opened the door, she was ON, no matter what happened in the kitchen. Her menus reflected that rule, and they were always deliciously simple and elegantly presented.
What is your fondest food-related childhood memory?
As very young children, on holidays in the country, my father would take us on a picnic in the fields. We would start by collecting wood, building a bonfire and cooking for what seemed “hours”.
When you began working on your book what comes first - the recipes or the concept?
The overall concept, criteria of recipes and parameters come first. Then I add my favorite stories and recipes.
What is your favorite comfort food?
A dish from Madrid called “Huevos Estrellados” made with soft fried potatoes and just fried eggs. Really simple and totally delicious.
What is your all-time favorite cookbook?
When I search for pure recipes and classic foods, I always refer to a book by the marquesa de Parabere, a Spanish aristocrat who wrote the guide in the late 1800’s filled with wonderful explanations of simple, elegant cooking.
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would you invite and what would you serve?
How about King Arthur, Merlin and the knights of the Round Table. Can you imagine the stories? I would serve them Roast Chicken with Winter Vegetables, Baby Potatoes with Herb Butter, Green Salad with Heirloom Tomatoes and Chocolate Cake. A hearty, elegant and simple menu made with really fresh ingredients.
What is your favorite way to spend the holidays?
I love sitting by the fireplace in our house in Southampton, with a mug of hot chocolate in my hand, playing Scrable with my children.
What books are currently on your bedside table?
I have just finished Nelson Demille’s latest “trashy” novel “The Gate House” which I mix with contemporary food writing like Simon Hopkinson’s Roast Chicken and Other Stories.
Victoria Amory’s Squash & Chestnut Soup
4 tablespoons butter
1-tablespoon olive oil
4 bacon strips, cut into strips
1 stalk celery, diced
2 lbs butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into cubes
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves of garlic, diced
12 sage leaves, coarsely chopped
10 roasted chestnuts, coarsely chopped
3-4 cups homemade broth*
Sea salt and ground pepper
Parmesan cheese to serve
In a large stockpot melt the butter with the olive oil. Add the bacon and celery and sauté until the bacon becomes crunchy and the celery is soft. Add the butternut squash, onion, garlic, sage leaves and chestnuts, stir and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the broth and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer until the vegetables are very soft, about 20-30 minutes.
Using the back of a spoon or a potato masher, press into the soup to puree the squash and leave a chunky texture. Taste, and season with salt and pepper.
Serve hot sprinkled with Parmesan cheese.
Serves 6
*Homemade Broth
In a large stockpot, place the ends of the celery, onion and its skin, rinds of squash, a clove of garlic, sage leaves, a carrot and some mushrooms with a tablespoon of peppercorns. Fill the pot with at least 8 cups of water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 20 minutes until the broth becomes fragrant and mahogany brown. Discard the solids and store the unused portion for up to a week.

My Favorite Things: James Andrew
My holiday profiles would not be complete without featuring one of my favorite people—James Andrew. Though James and I only recently meet, I feel as though I have know him forever. Not only do I adore him, but I love his sense of style. My husband, son and I had the pleasure of meeting James and his partner Scott for drinks while in New York and we look forward to seeing them both again in the near future.
My favorite gifts to give this year?
Cire Trudon "Trianon" candles (candle maker to the court of Versailles). They evoke the country life and dreams of Marie Antoinette. Also, the book Harmonic Wealth by James Arthur Ray. It’s an amazing book that tells us exactly what we need to do to create the life of our dreams.
My favorite gift to receive?
Gifts for my whippets Rupert and Nigel and donations to my favorite charities (mostly animal rescue).
My favorite way to celebrate the holidays?
I like to celebrate by entertaining at home, cooking fantastic meals—breakfast, lunch and dinner. I love to set a great table. I put pots of paper whites, amaryllis and Rigaud cypress green candles everywhere! Of course no celebration is complete without Dom Pérignon, great wines and great friends. I try to create an environment that engages all the senses—it just does not get better than that!
My favorite luxury in life?
Taking a minute or two to savour a moment like the wonderful photo posted on The Peak of Chic taken from a 1948 House & Garden. A beautiful table, holiday decorations and a very chic couple taking a moment to be intimate just before their guests are due to arrive—now that is a luxurious moment!
My favorite current books?
The above mentioned Harmonic Wealth by James Arthur Ray , I am learning so much and these subtle shifts in thought and perception make all the difference in achieving one's dreams. I also love the new Jacques Grange book—what an amazing list of clients and a spectacular body of work—genius!
My favorite holiday song?
David Bowie and Bing Croby's version of Little Drummer Boy.
My favorite party clothes?
A Gucci black wool dinner jacket with black velvet buttons and trim, a tartan tie or shirt and black velvet pants. Gucci's version of a Belgian loafer in black suede and leather and red cashmere socks.
My favorite holiday desert?
Bûche de Noël—tasty and chic!
My favorite city?
New York, I think it is the center of the universe! Anything can happen here, I love all the excitement and the possibilities.
My favorite cities for shopping?
New York, Paris and London.
My all time favorite movie?
Auntie Mame. I never tire of it and it always brings a smile to my face. Now why didn't I have an Aunt like that?

Miscellaneous Memories
No soup today, we are baking cookies in our house and it smells heavenly! So far we have snickerdoodles, peanut butter buttons, sugar cookies, butterscotch crunch, cocoa orange spice, banana chocolate oat, snowberries and the dough for peppermint swirls chilling in the refrigerator.
For those who are new readers I thought that I would post two of my favorite posts from last holiday season - The Bing Crosby and David Bowie's Peace on Earth video and my interview with author and Rankin/Bass historian Rick Goldschmidt.
On September 11, 1977 Bing Crosby was in London on a concert tour and to tape his yearly TV Christmas special. It was Bing's idea that he should have a young star as a guest on his TV show. Someone suggested David Bowie.
The idea was that he and Bowie would perform "The Little Drummer Boy" as a duet. Bowie felt the song did not showcase his voice very well, so the writers added "Peace on Earth," which suited Bowie's voice quite well. The two met for the first time on the morning of the taping, rehearsed for an hour and finished their duet in only three takes. Bing died a month later. The public did not see their performance until after his death.
I hope that new and longtime readers alike will enjoy the trip down memory lane.

My Favorite Things: Eric Prokesh
When I first started All the Best back in January 2007, one of the very first people that I posted on was the Dallas based designer Eric Prokesh. The photos of his home from Southern Accents remain some of my very favorite interiors, even to this day. I have had the pleasure of corresponding with Eric over the past few years and he is a class act.
The next time that I am in Texas I promise to make the trip to Dallas so that we can meet in person, and I can actually “see” some of my very favorite rooms. In the meantime, the photos above will have to suffice.

My Favorite Things: Nathan Turner
Nathan Turner lounging in Acapulco during the Christmas holiday.
I adore this photo of Nathan Turner, owner of Nathan Turner Interiors & Antiques in Los Angeles. Already an international jet setter from a tender age. Nathan's reflections are a great reminder at this time of year, "It was a very common thing in my family to travel to some sunny tropical location (Fiji,Tahiti or Hawaii) to escape the San Francisco fog and rain. It also taught us that Christmas wasn't all about the presents, as we would only get one present each on the trip, but it was usually a good one. Another lesson....quality over quantity!"

A Maresca Christmas
One of the Christmas spreads that I drool over each year is the Charleston home of architects Mark and Melissa Maresca. It was featured several years ago in Southern Accents and it still boasts beautiful, timeless interiors. Mark and Melissa stand in front of their parterre garden filled with potted poinsettias.
Simple greenery and early 19th-century carved urns grace the dinning room of the 1790 single house on South Battery.
A crackling fire, lush swags of magnolia leaves, a dark rich ceiling and modern lighting add warmth to the kitchen.
Beautiful charcoal-brown walls are the perfect backdrop for a 19th-century French mirror decorated in simple greenery.

My Favorite Things: Michael Devine
Michael Devine with his Grandmother
My Favorite Things series was such a hit last year that I thought I would do it again this holiday season. Not only is it one of my very favorite songs, but also I love to know what others cherish and hold dear, especially at this time of the year. Having just kicked off the holiday season with Michael and Thomas, this seemed an appropriate first profile. I particularly love the photo of Michael with his “first style icon” as he lovingly referred to his Grandmother.
I have so many wonderful profiles to share with you over the next few weeks so be sure to bookmark All the Best. I would also like to know your favorite things. You can email me at allthebestblog@gmail.com or leave them in the comment section. I will compile at list of readers’ favorite things and post it on Christmas Eve. You can include a photo too if you wish and I will select a few to publish.
Michael Devine:
My favorite gift to give this year?
The notepad and pencil cup from my new signature collection in the patten Bagatelle. It's so handy—the pad is easy to find even on my messy desk.
My favorite gift to receive?
Every year Thomas has one standard gift to give me—a year worth of Aqua Di Parma cologne. It’s my favorite scent.
My favorite way to celebrate the holidays?
We have hosted a very, very small dinner on Christmas Eve with our friends Michael Rosenberg, Leonard Kowalski and Katharine T. Carter in the country for the last several years and now its tradition.
My favorite luxury in life?
Spending time with Thomas with nothing to do is a rare luxury. Especially in the country since the office is always just short distance away and there is always some work that needs to get done.
My favorite current book?
I just started Make Way for Lucia by E. F. Benson. I can't put it down, mostly because it reminds so much of Kinderhook.
My favorite holiday song?
I'll be Home for Christmas. It may not be my favorite, but it's most appropriate, especially to my dear sister and family in Illinois. It seems like I end up singing it to her every year. Next year....really!
My favorite party clothes?
My J. Press red plaid pants. I am ready for those the day after Halloween.
My favorite cookie?
Peppernuts made by my surrogate mother Karen Stransky, from back home in Grand Detour, Illinois. She sends them to me every year along with my favorite fudge. It's always a highlight of my holiday season.
My favorite city?
Paris, Paris, Paris!
My favorite place to shop?
FNAC any of them—I can spend hours in one.
My favorite movie to watch again and again?
Chocolate - The story and Juliette Binoche are beyond.

Window Shopping
This year was the first time in three years that we have been in the States for Thanksgiving and Black Friday. One of the most prolific New York City holiday traditions has to be the beautiful department store windows—a visual delight for the whole family. We decided to take in the sights and do a little window shopping.
My personal favourite was the Bloomingdale's windows inspired by Tony Bennett's new holiday album A Swingin' Christmas. I adore Tony Bennett and I love Christmas nostalgia. There are no clothes on display, just a dreamy vision of years gone by and a winter-wonderland. While I was off shopping, my sweet husband bought me the Swingin' Christmas album and it's great!
The other much-loved window was Lord & Taylor’s tribute to My Favorite Christmas Traditions. Each holiday window displays popular Christmas traditions including Christmas cards, Christmas treats, Christmas stories, Christmas ornaments, Christmas toys and Christmas songs.
To end the day and kick off the Christmas season we met James Andrew and Scott McBee for cocktails at the Silverleaf Tavern. James and Scott are truly two of the nicest people. Both are so talented, and yet very down to earth.
We had so much fun that we all met for dinner the next evening at the ingenious Manhattan barbecue joint Blue Smoke. If you are ever in the area, you must go just for the Bleu Smoke Martinis—Stolichnaya vodka, Ardbeg 10 year Whisky and blue cheese-stuffed olives. We are working to recreate this concoction at home…YUM!
